It creates sympathy for the monster, if you are with the family. It is very clear that he feels lonely and wants a family. Much of what he does is out of the loneliness and the knowledge that he is a monster.

Victor is more complicated. He created a monster, and then forgotten. It's nice because their lives are set apart so clear.
